FPL S1 Week 1 Drama: Thrilling Wins, Close Calls, and This Week's StarPerformers

The 2024/25 FPL season has kicked off, and it's already delivering on its promise of high-stakes drama and intense competition. The FPL Pro Leagues Free Prize League saw its first group stage games in the League of Champions Competition, and let’s just say – it did not disappoint.

From big wins to heartbreaking near misses, here's a recap of all the action and what it means for the rest of the season.

League of Champions Highlights

Haykinz FC's Big Win
Let's start with a high note. Haykinz FC put on a clinic with a stunning 88 points, cruising past Tallulah's Tigers and setting the bar high for the competition. The team's strategic moves paid off in a big way, and they're already looking like a force to be reckoned with.

The Shit-Stick Award
On the flip side, not everyone had a week to remember. Our very own Stew had a rough go with Herron FC, managing just 31 points. And with Rinocrosslin10 putting up a solid 77 points, the gap was, well, a bit painful to watch. Here's to bouncing back stronger, Stew!

Heartbreak for Freetown Falcons
In one of the tightest matches of the week, Freetown Falcons came agonisingly close to victory, only to be pipped at the post by iambatman by a single point. Ouch! That's one that'll sting for a while.

The 2-Point Club

Several teams found themselves on the wrong side of a narrow 2-point defeat:

  • Achilles Denton 2.0 couldn't quite edge out Threepeat Loading…
  • El Guiri was bested by Hehehehe in a close-fought match
  • Under my Cucurella narrowly lost to Viktory, who's also in the running for best team name of the season
  • Tavio Tipster fell just short against Hasbulla Army
  • And in the most ironic twist, Running away with it was beaten by Don'tLookBackInAgger

First Draw of the Season
A special mention goes to CoolHen8 and Col Palmer Innit who shared the spoils in the first draw of the competition. With so many close games, this season promises to be a rollercoaster from start to finish.

Gameweek 1 Star Performers and Surprises

Mohamed Salah Shines
Gameweek 1 saw some interesting developments in the Fantasy Premier League. Mohamed Salah outshone other popular captain choices such as Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak, proving his worth to those who backed him. Despite Haaland's preseason form making him a popular pick, and his goal in Manchester City’s win against Chelsea, it was Salah who stole the spotlight with a stellar performance. Bukayo Saka also proved to be a brilliant differential captain, delivering a goal, an assist, and bonus points in Arsenal’s victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Dominic Solanke Disappoints
On the flip side, Dominic Solanke, who had a solid last season, didn't quite reward his backers in Gameweek 1 as many managers had hoped. For those who took a gamble on him, it might be time to reconsider your options for the upcoming gameweeks.

Defensive Heroes
For managers looking at defensive options, Tyrick Mitchell of Crystal Palace and Mark Flekken of Brentford stood out as excellent value picks. Both Crystal Palace and Brentford showed strong defensive potential, making these players solid choices for those aiming to bolster their backlines.

Captaincy Options Going Forward
As you strategize for upcoming gameweeks, it's clear that Salah, Haaland, and Isak remain strong captaincy options due to their goal-scoring potential, especially against weaker defences. These players will likely be key to securing those all-important points as the season progresses.

What's Next?

The Champs League is offering £78 to the winner and £52 to the runner- up, pretty close to the rewards for finishing 4th overall in the league. It's a competition worth keeping an eye on, and we'll be following the action closely as the stakes get higher.

Looking Ahead to Week 4
The League Cup competition kicks off in Week 4, and it's never too early to start strategising. Are you aiming to win every competition or focusing on dominating one in particular? Either way, GW2 is another chance to make your mark. Get those squads adjusted, pick your captains wisely, and let's see who rises to the top!

Full Time

The first gameweek has set the tone for an exhilarating season ahead. Whether you're flying high or licking your wounds, the next few weeks are crucial for setting yourself up for success. Stay tuned for more updates, insights, and tips as we continue to navigate this wild FPL ride.
